This is when the baking turns comforting. Spiced carrot cake, banana bread, the cranberry and walnut loaf, pies that make a Tuesday bearable, and birthday cakes for everyone born in the dark half of the year.

A fortnight for cakes, days for loaves

Celebration cakes want about two weeks. Loaves, cookies and pies can usually be done at much shorter notice. Ask and I'll tell you what's realistic for your date.

The bakes that suit the weather

Spiced carrot with cinnamon and pineapple is the cake autumn was invented for, and it is one of the three I bake vegan. Banana bread is the one that gets eaten standing at the kitchen counter. The cranberry and walnut loaf is sharper than it sounds, and goes properly with a cup of tea and a bad afternoon. Oatmeal and raisin cookies belong in this list too.

Birthdays in the dark half of the year

Autumn birthdays get the good cakes because nobody is trying to eat lightly. Chocolate under coffee buttercream, red velvet, or a character cake for a child who does not care what season it is. Send me the age, the theme and a photograph of anything you are matching.

Pies, properly

September is when the pies start earning their place. Beef with potato, thyme and garlic; chicken with potato and thyme; the vegetarian one with cheese, potato, carrot, sweetcorn and peas. All hand-crimped, and they can go home frozen so your freezer does the planning for you.

Harvest, Diwali, half term, bonfire night

Autumn is a run of small occasions, most of which just want feeding. Cookie boxes, trays of brownies, a loaf to take to somebody's house. Give me the date and a rough head count and I'll come back with a price.

What do you bake in autumn?

Can I order pies for the freezer?

Yes. Pies and sausage rolls can be collected frozen and baked at home whenever you want them. Ask for it in the notes when you order.
