Party Sandwich Platter Peterborough: How Much to Order

10 minute read

A party sandwich platter in Peterborough should do two jobs at once: feed the room properly and let the host enjoy the party. I make mine to order in my registered home kitchen in Peterborough, with the fillings you choose, every platter labelled with its ingredients and allergens, and vegetarian and vegan sandwiches on platters of their own. This guide answers what people ask before they book: how many platters a party needs, which fillings work, what it costs, how far ahead to order, how long platters can sit out, and how delivery works across the PE postcodes.

I bake and cook alone, in small batches, from generational recipes. My gran catered birthdays, weddings and every family gathering in between, and I learned that a well-fed room is a happy room long before I learned to pipe a rosette. Party food is where I started, and a table emptying in the right order is still my favourite sight.

If you already have a date and a headcount, my sandwich platters in Peterborough page has the enquiry form: send the date, the number of guests, the address and any dietary needs, and I will come back with a menu and a written quote.

What is a party sandwich platter, and why order one in Peterborough?

A party sandwich platter is a tray of freshly made sandwiches, cut small enough to eat standing up, sized to your guest list and delivered ready to put on the table. Ordering one locally means the sandwiches are made for your date, by someone who answers your questions, rather than assembled for a shelf.

The appeal is simple arithmetic. A homemade spread for forty people means a day of shopping, buttering and clingfilm, and a host who arrives at their own party exhausted. A platter turns up ready, labelled and covered, and goes from the fridge to the table when guests arrive.

Britain is fluent in the language: British Sandwich Association figures cited by the University of Manchester put the UK's habit at more than 11.5 billion sandwiches a year. At a party, the trick is not making a sandwich people will eat. It is making enough, in the right mix, for the right moment.

(I have never seen a sandwich platter come home from a party, only empty trays and a few people asking who made them)

How many sandwich platters do I need for a party?

Plan by how many rounds each guest will eat, then let your caterer turn that into platters. The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health publishes a caterer's lunch menu that sizes a sandwich-and-fruit lunch at one and a half rounds a head, dropping to one and a quarter when finger food is served too, and to three quarters with finger food and salad.

Each round means two slices and a filling, normally cut in four, so one and a half rounds works out at six small sandwiches for every guest. Here is how that works in practice.

For twenty guests where sandwiches are the main event, plan on about thirty rounds. For fifty guests at a party with plenty of other food on the table, three quarters of a round each gives you around thirty eight rounds. For an afternoon do where people graze between drinks, the lower figure is usually right. For a lunchtime gathering where the food is the meal, the higher one is.

Children eat less than adults, until they suddenly eat more than anyone expected, so for a children's party plan on a little under the adult figure and add a separate platter of plain favourites. Tell me the headcount, the time of day and what else is on the table, and I will size the platters for you, so nobody goes hungry and nothing goes in the bin.

Which fillings make the best party sandwich platter?

The best party sandwich platter mixes four or five fillings that cover the classics, gives vegetarian and vegan guests their own clearly labelled platter, and uses bread soft enough to bite cleanly but sturdy enough to hold together on a paper plate.

Variety matters less than balance. Twelve fillings nobody can tell apart please a room less than five good ones that people recognise and come back for. A mix of a meat favourite, a fish option, an egg or cheese classic and a properly good vegetarian sandwich covers most parties. If you know the crowd has strong opinions, tell me, and the fillings follow your brief.

Vegetarian and vegan sandwiches go on their own platters with their own labels, so they are not stranded at the end of a mixed tray where someone has to guess. Every platter carries its ingredients and allergens, which saves the host a dozen conversations about what is in the egg ones.

Party platters to order in Peterborough: what can you get?

From me, party platters to order in Peterborough come in four shapes: sandwich platters made to your brief and quoted per head; fixed-price corporate lunch boxes with sandwiches and bakes; grazing tables built on site; and sweet platters of cupcakes, brownies and cookies to finish the table.

For most parties, the sandwich platter is the base: savoury, filling and easy to serve. Add something sweet and the table is done. My cupcakes in Peterborough are £4 each, with a minimum of 24 and up to two flavours, and match any party colour scheme.

If you would rather choose from a set menu with the price shown up front, my corporate lunch boxes work well for office parties and away days. The Meeting Lunch Box is £96 and feeds 10 to 12, the Team Lunch Box is £186 for 20 to 24, the Office Buffet Box is £288 for 30 to 36, and the Conference Buffet Box is £384 for 40 to 48, all with half sandwiches, brownies and cookies, and cupcakes in the buffet boxes. They are ordered online at least two weeks ahead.

For a bigger celebration, a party grazing table is built at your venue: a long table of cakes, brownies, cookies and savoury bakes that looks after itself all evening, quoted to your guests.

Food platters for parties in Peterborough, UK: which suits your party?

Choose food platters for parties by the shape of the event rather than the size of the guest list. Standing parties want one-handed food; sit-down gatherings can take something more substantial; long afternoons want food that holds up on the table.

For a children's birthday party, sandwiches cut small, a plain platter for the fussy eaters, and cupcakes in the party colours. For a milestone birthday, a sandwich platter for the room and a cake for the candles; my birthday cakes in Peterborough need four weeks' notice as standard. For a christening or a baby shower, lighter fillings, a vegetarian platter and something pretty to finish.

For an office party or a training day, platters that are tidy, labelled and easy to set out on a meeting room table, with a proper invoice afterwards. For a garden party in summer, plan the timing carefully, because sandwiches and sunshine are not old friends. My guide to party food to order covers the rest of the spread.

For the gathering after a funeral, I keep it quiet and simple: sandwich platters and a little cake, delivered on time, so the family can look after each other while the food looks after itself.

How much does a party sandwich platter cost?

Sandwich platters are priced per head, depending on the fillings, the headcount and what else you want on the table, and I quote in writing before you commit to anything. Delivery is added to the quote, costing £3 at minimum, then 55p per mile from the city centre, and collecting in Peterborough costs nothing.

A per-head quote is fairer than a menu price for a party, because forty people at an afternoon do need very different platters from forty people at a working lunch. The quote tells you exactly what is coming, how it is labelled and what it costs, with no surprises after the event.

If you want a fixed price today, the corporate lunch boxes above show theirs, from £96 for ten to twelve people. And if the party is a business event, businesses get a written quote up front and a proper invoice afterwards.

How far ahead should I order party platters?

Sandwich platters need one week's notice, so the fillings, labels and delivery can be planned around your date. Christmas is the busiest time of year for party food, so for December, ask as soon as you have a date. A party grazing table wants three to four weeks, and corporate lunch boxes are ordered online two weeks ahead.

The earlier you ask, the more choice you have, because a small kitchen can only take so many parties on one Saturday. If your party is closer than a week away, ask anyway: some weeks have room, and I will give you a straight answer either way. A cake for the same party needs its own notice, four weeks as standard for a personalised cake.

Do you deliver party platters across Peterborough?

Yes. I deliver party platters across Peterborough and the PE postcodes, from Stamford and the Deepings to Huntingdon, Spalding, Wisbech and King's Lynn, and to offices and business parks including Lynch Wood, Orton Southgate, Fengate and Hampton. Delivery is £3 minimum, then 55p a mile, and collection is free.

Platters arrive covered and labelled. Tell me where the fridge is, or whether there is one, and the time guests arrive, and I will plan the delivery around it.

How long can party sandwich platters be left out?

Hold the platters in the fridge until the first guests walk in, and only then set them out. The rule comes from the government's food hygiene guidance for businesses: the legal limit for chilled food in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 8°C, and chilled food can spend no more than four hours out of the fridge before it has to be thrown away.

In practice, the four hours start when the platters leave the fridge, not when people start eating. Set them out as the doorbell starts ringing rather than when you finish decorating, and bring out a second platter halfway through rather than everything at once. At a venue, ask where the fridge is before you need it.

(the four hour rule is the only time a sandwich has a curfew stricter than the guests)

Are party platters safe for guests with allergies?

Each platter is labelled with what is in it and which allergens it contains, and the vegetarian and vegan sandwiches sit on platters of their own. Because nuts and every other major allergen are used in my kitchen, traces can never be ruled out, so mention any allergy when you enquire and read my allergen information before you order.

The law asks for this too: when you order food remotely, the business has to give you allergen information both before you pay and when the food arrives. I go a step further and talk it through with you before anything is made.

It is also worth checking who makes your party food. Anyone selling food has to register with the council, and gov.uk confirms that registration covers home kitchens and businesses that only sell online. Then look for the hygiene rating, which inspectors award from 0 to 5: a 5 means hygiene standards are very good and fully comply with the law. Mine is a 5, and the badge is in the footer of every page.

Office Christmas party platters and the £150 rule

For an office Christmas party, platters do the feeding and the festive bakes do the cheering. An annual staff party is exempt from tax and National Insurance if it is open to all your employees, happens every year and costs £150 or less per head, which comfortably covers a good spread.

My Christmas menu adds cookie boxes, brownies and rum fruit cake to the table, and the Christmas fruit cake has a story of its own. For colleagues working from home, my guide to letterbox Christmas gifts has festive boxes that post straight to their door, and a box of cookies delivered UK-wide or letterbox cakes by post reaches anyone who could not make the party.

What should be on a party food platter?
Four or five sandwich fillings that cover the classics, a properly good vegetarian option on its own platter, and food people can eat standing up with one hand.
