The theme

Matched to the shower, not off a shelf

Baby shower cakes carry the theme more than any other cake I make: sage and cream, blush and gold, clouds and stars, a teddy or a pair of booties on top, or a name across the front if one has been chosen. Send me a photograph of the invitation or the decorations and I will build the cake to sit in the middle of them. If the palette is staying neutral until the baby arrives, neutral is a look I do a lot of, and it photographs beautifully.

The table

Cupcakes and small bakes for the room

A shower is a grazing sort of afternoon, so most orders grow a table: hand-piped cupcakes in the shower colours, £4.00 each with a minimum of 24 cupcakes, with choux buns and cookies alongside if you want more than one thing to reach for. One order and one conversation covers the cake and the table, and everything arrives labelled with its ingredients and allergens.

The cake itself

Sponge and filling

Vanilla with real vanilla bean is the crowd-safe base and the one most showers choose, with strawberry jam or lemon curd through the middle for a bit of brightness. Chocolate, red velvet and spiced carrot all hold up just as well under soft icing. Tell me who is coming and I will tell you honestly what cuts well for a room of mixed ages, because a shower usually has grandparents and toddlers eating the same slice.

The reveal

If the shower is also the reveal

Plenty of showers double as the gender reveal, and that is a cake I make often: the colour goes into the sponge, the outside gives nothing away, and I am the only person who knows until somebody cuts it. Send me the result privately, however suits you, and I will confirm I have it and never mention it again. It is somebody's news, not mine.

Timing

Timing and the day itself

Ask about two weeks ahead, or four weeks for large or heavily decorated cakes. A shower is usually pinned to a weekend that cannot move, so the earlier the date is in my book the safer it sits. Collection in Peterborough is free and local delivery is priced in your quote. Werrington, Orton, Hampton, Stanground, Longthorpe, Bretton and the rest of the city are all on the round. If the cake is going to a venue rather than to you, tell me who is receiving it and when the room opens.

The rest of it

New baby, next cake

A shower is rarely the last cake a family orders. Christenings and first birthdays come out of the same kitchen, so tell me the theme once and I will still have it when the next occasion comes round.

How big a cake do you need?

Showers tend to be one room, so an eight-inch covers most of them. Two portion counts, because the industry quietly uses both.

Cake sizeParty slicesFinger portions
6 inch10–1215
8 inch16–2024
10 inch26–3038
12 inch40–4456

A party slice is a proper dessert wedge, the kind you'd actually serve at a birthday. A finger portion is the thin wedding-style slice that makes a cake stretch much further. They're just different slices of the same cake, so tell me which you have in mind.

Before you ask

Questions people ask

How far ahead should I order a baby shower cake in Peterborough?

About two weeks, or four if the design is detailed. Showers are booked to a fixed weekend, so the date matters more than the design at first: get it in the book, then we perfect the cake.

Can you match the cake to our baby shower theme?

Yes, and it is the best brief you can give me. Send a photograph of the invitation, the balloons or the colour palette and the cake is built to match: pastels, neutrals, clouds, teddies, booties, or a name if one is ready to share.

Can the baby shower cake double as a gender reveal?

Yes. The colour is baked into the sponge, the outside stays neutral, and you send me the result privately. I confirm I have it and never mention it again, so the room finds out when the knife does.

Do you make baby shower cupcakes as well as a cake?

Yes: hand-piped in the shower colours, £4.00 each with a minimum of 24 cupcakes. A cake for the photographs and cupcakes for the room is the most-ordered combination.

Do you deliver baby shower cakes in Peterborough?

Collection is free, and local delivery across Peterborough and the PE postcodes is priced in your quote. If it is going to a venue, tell me who is receiving it and when the room opens.
