Bow Cake Ideas: The Birthday Cake Trends for 2027

11 minute read

A bow cake is a celebration cake crowned with a bow, usually made from sugarpaste and shaped so the loops stand up as if somebody has just tied a present. It is the birthday look of the moment, and at Sploffin I make bow cakes to order in my registered home kitchen in Peterborough, from a tidy single bow on a small round cake to a big, glossy statement on a milestone birthday. This guide covers what a bow cake is, which bow suits which birthday, the birthday cake trends for 2027 that sit alongside it, and how much notice to give.

I learned to bake at my gran's side. She catered birthdays and weddings, and I took my own first orders at fifteen. A bow has always been the quickest way I know to turn a cake into a present before anybody has lifted the knife, and now the rest of the country has noticed.

If you already know the date, my birthday cakes in Peterborough page has the enquiry form: send the date, roughly how many people and a word about the colours, and collection from my kitchen is free.

What is a bow cake?

A bow cake is any cake where the bow is the main decoration rather than a detail. The bow can sit on top like a gift, wrap around the side like ribbon on a parcel, or run down one face of a tall cake. Most are finished in smooth icing so the bow has a clean background, and most use one or two colours so the shape does the talking.

Three bow styles cover most designs. The loop bow is a cluster of folded sugarpaste loops gathered in the middle, the classic present on a cake. The flat bow is a broad, tied bow lying across the top, with two tails that trail over the edge. The ribbon band is a strip of icing or real ribbon around the base, finished with a small neat bow at the front.

(a bow is the only decoration that makes a cake look as if it should be unwrapped rather than cut)

Why are bow cakes trending?

Bow cakes are trending because they photograph beautifully, suit every age and need no explanation: everybody knows what a bow means. They also flatter a simple cake. One confident bow on a smooth finish looks considered in a way that ten small decorations rarely do.

The numbers back it up. Google's own Keyword Planner puts searches for "bow cake" in the UK at between 1,000 and 10,000 a month, and searches for "bow birthday cake" were up 900% on three months earlier when I checked in October 2026. That is a trend still climbing, not one on its way out.

It sits inside a wider mood, too. Pinterest's 2026 wedding trends report for the UK says cakes are getting "a personality upgrade", with polka dots among the finishes turning them into edible art, and a bow is the easiest way to give a cake that personality without turning it into a sculpture.

Bow birthday cake ideas: which bow suits which birthday?

A bow birthday cake works for any age; the colour and the size of the bow do the adjusting. Here is how I match them.

For a first birthday, a soft pastel loop bow on a small round cake, with the age piped on the front. It reads as a present, it looks lovely in photographs, and it is gentle enough not to compete with the birthday child.

For a teenager, one oversized bow in a single bold colour, black, red or a deep pink, on plain white. It looks grown-up, which is exactly the point at that age.

For a 30th, 40th or 50th, a black or deep jewel bow with a scatter of small sugar flowers and a touch of gold. The black loop bow below shows how far one colour can go: elegant rather than cute, with small gold-centred flowers to keep it from feeling severe.

For the big milestones, 70th, 80th and 90th, a flat bow with a little shimmer and a sugar rose. The purple bow below was made for a 90th, and the shimmer is what makes it feel like a party rather than a formality.

For someone who would rather not be fussed over, a narrow ribbon band and a small front bow. It is quiet, tidy and still unmistakably a birthday cake. Piped names, ages and short messages are included in the price of every birthday cake I make, so the bow never has to share its moment with a separate charge.

Which colours work best on a bow cake?

Two colours is the sweet spot for a bow cake: one for the cake and one for the bow. The contrast is what makes the shape stand out, and a third colour usually belongs in small details such as sugar flowers or a piped name rather than in the bow itself.

The pairings I reach for are white with black for a grown-up birthday, white with soft pink or pale blue for a first birthday or a new arrival, cream with gold for a milestone, and white with a deep jewel colour, purple, emerald or burgundy, when the birthday deserves a little drama. A pale pistachio green sponge under a white bow is a lovely quiet surprise when the cake is cut.

If the party already has a theme, send me a photo of the invitation, the balloons or the outfit and I will match the colours to it. Matching is far easier than guessing, and it means the cake looks as though it belongs in the photographs rather than arriving from somewhere else.

Birthday cake trends 2027: what carries on from 2026?

The birthday cake trends for 2027 are mostly the trends of 2026 growing up: bows, pistachio, playful colour, and cakes that feel personal rather than generic. Searches for "birthday cake trends 2026" and "2027" are still small, but the styles inside them are where the real volume is. This is what I expect to bake most next year, and why.

Bows stay at the top. With searches still rising sharply in late 2026, I expect bows to carry straight through 2027, moving from pastel loops towards bolder single colours and bigger, simpler shapes.

Playful finishes keep growing. In the same Pinterest report, Pinterest searches for polka dot cakes rose 270% and for kitsch cakes 545%, which tells me people want cakes with a sense of humour. A bow with a scatter of polka dots is an easy way to try both trends on one cake.

Number cakes and character cakes never really leave. A big hand-made numeral on a round cake, or a cake shaped as a favourite animal, like the first-birthday cat cake below, is a classic for children, and plenty of grown-ups quietly want one too.

Cupcakes are having a moment of their own. Pinterest's report lists whimsical cupcakes among its rising searches, and a tower of piped cupcakes in Peterborough feeds a party without anybody needing a knife. My guide to the UK's favourite cupcake flavours covers which flavours people actually pick.

Is pistachio the birthday cake flavour for 2027?

Pistachio is the flavour of the moment, and a pistachio birthday cake is the one to watch for 2027. The Grocer reports that maple, pistachio and sour cherry have carried through much of 2026 across desserts and bakery, and pistachio is the one turning up in birthday conversations.

It suits a birthday because it is grown-up without being bitter, and its soft green looks wonderful with a white or cream bow. Pistachio birthday cakes are taken by enquiry: ask about a pistachio birthday cake with your date, your numbers and the bow you have in mind, and a firm price, flavour and filling included, follows within ten business days, before you commit to anything.

If pistachio is a step too far, my birthday sponges include rich chocolate, real vanilla and carrot cake, which I also bake vegan. The flavour inside matters more than the bow outside, however lovely the bow.

How much does a bow cake cost?

Every bow cake I make is quoted individually, because the price follows the size, the number of tiers and how much hand decoration is involved, not the bow alone. A single neat bow is quick to make; a large shimmering bow dressed with sugar flowers takes far longer, and the quote reflects that.

I reply to every enquiry within three to five business days, and a firm price follows within ten business days, in writing, with what it includes. A 50% deposit holds the date once you are happy, and the balance is due the week before. For something smaller and fixed-price, my cupcake boxes are £42 for twelve, and a personalised cake for any other celebration starts with the same short enquiry.

How far ahead should I order a bow birthday cake?

Order a bow birthday cake four weeks ahead as standard, and six to eight weeks ahead for large or heavily decorated cakes. A bow made from sugarpaste is shaped in advance and left to firm up so the loops hold, which is part of why the notice matters. Rush orders inside that notice carry a rush fee, quoted with the price.

The earlier you enquire, the more room there is to try a flavour or change a colour before the day. If the party is next weekend and you are reading this in a mild panic, ask anyway: I will always tell you honestly what is possible.

What size bow cake do I need?

A 6 inch round feeds 10 to 12 people with party slices, an 8 inch feeds 16 to 20, a 10 inch 26 to 30 and a 12 inch 40 to 44. Cut into finger portions, the same cakes stretch to 15, 24, 38 and 56. A bow looks best with a little space around it, so if you are torn between two sizes, the larger cake gives the bow more room to show off.

For the arithmetic in more detail, my cake portion sizes guide works through the numbers for different parties.

Are fondant bows and glitter safe to eat?

Sugarpaste bows are made of icing, so they are edible, though they set firm and many people prefer to lift the bow off and keep it rather than eat it. Real fabric ribbon is a different matter: it is decoration only, and it comes off before the cake is cut.

Glitter is the one to ask about. America's Food and Drug Administration advises bakers to avoid glitters and dusts on cakes unless they are made to be edible, because some decorative glitters are sold for cakes without being food at all. Wherever you order a sparkly bow, ask whether the shimmer is edible.

Allergens count on the decoration too. The Food Standards Agency says allergen information covers anything present in the final product, including garnishes and cake decorations, so a sugar flower or a dusted bow is part of the answer. My kitchen handles all 14 major allergens, nuts included, so I cannot promise any bake is free of traces. My allergen information page is the place to start.

Can a bow cake be delivered or posted?

A bow cake is delivered, never posted: a tall cake with standing loops would not survive a letterbox. Collection from my kitchen is free, and delivery across Peterborough and the villages around it is priced in your quote, so the figure is in writing before you pay anything.

For a birthday too far away for a cake, the post does a gentler job. My guide to letterbox cakes by post explains how thick slices travel safely, my guide to the letterbox birthday cake covers sending one with a handwritten card, and cookies delivered UK-wide are the other good option. In December, my guide to letterbox Christmas gifts covers the festive boxes, and my Christmas fruit cake guide tells the story of the family's rum-soaked recipe.

Why order a bow cake from Sploffin?

Because the person who designs the bow is the person who bakes the sponge under it. Sploffin is a registered home kitchen in Peterborough with a food hygiene rating of 5, the top score on the scheme local councils use to inspect and rate food businesses. Every cake is baked to order from generational recipes, with real butter, and decorated by hand for one person's birthday.

The bow is shaped by hand for your cake rather than taken from a box. That is the difference you can see in the photographs, and the one you can taste when the knife goes in.

How do I order a bow cake from Sploffin?

Ordering takes one short form. Open my birthday cake enquiry, tell me the date, roughly how many people, the age if it is a milestone, the colours, and the bow you have in mind, from a soft loop to a bold flat bow. Add a photo of the invitation or a colour you love if you have one.

I reply within three to five business days, send a firm price within ten business days, and once you are happy a 50% deposit holds the date. Then I bake your sponge, shape your bow, and the cake is ready to collect from my kitchen or delivered to your door. The candles, as ever, are your department.

Questions people ask

What is a bow cake?
A bow cake is a celebration cake where a bow is the main decoration, usually shaped from sugarpaste so the loops stand up like a wrapped present. It can sit on top, wrap around the side or run down one face. One or two colours on a smooth finish let the shape do the work, which is why it suits every age.
Are bow cakes still in style for 2027?
Yes. Google Keyword Planner puts UK searches for bow cakes at between 1,000 and 10,000 a month, and searches for bow birthday cakes were up 900% over three months in autumn 2026. I expect bows to carry through 2027, shifting towards bolder single colours and bigger, simpler shapes.
Is the bow on a bow cake edible?
A sugarpaste bow is icing, so it can be eaten, though it sets firm and many people lift it off as a keepsake. Fabric ribbon is decoration only and comes off before cutting. For any glitter or shimmer, ask whether it is sold as edible, since some decorative glitters are not food.
How much does a bow birthday cake cost?
Each one is quoted individually, because the price follows the size, the tiers and the amount of hand decoration rather than the bow alone. At Sploffin I reply within three to five business days and send a firm written price within ten business days. A 50% deposit holds the date, with the balance due the week before.
How far in advance should I order a bow cake?
Four weeks ahead is the standard notice for a Sploffin birthday cake, and six to eight weeks for a large or heavily decorated one. The bow is shaped in advance and left to firm up so the loops hold. Orders inside that notice can sometimes be done, with a rush fee quoted alongside the price.
What are the birthday cake trends for 2027?
Bows lead, followed by pistachio as the flavour of the moment, playful finishes such as polka dots, and whimsical cupcakes. Number cakes and character cakes remain firm favourites for children. The common thread is personality: cakes that clearly belong to one person rather than to a supermarket shelf.
Can I order a pistachio birthday cake?
Yes, by enquiry. Pistachio is the flavour of the moment, and a soft green pistachio sponge under a white or cream bow makes a lovely grown-up birthday cake. Send your date, guest numbers and the look you want through the Sploffin enquiry form, and you will have a reply within three to five business days and a firm price within ten.
