Made to order in Peterborough
Mini cakes in Peterborough: the whole thing, just smaller
A mini cake is the same cake made small. The standard cakes are baked as usual and little rounds are cut out of them with a ring mould, so the sponge, the layers and the filling are identical to the full-size one. Made to order in Peterborough, and gone in an evening. Nothing sits on the side going dry for a week.
(a cake for two, and no fortnight of leftovers)

What it is
Small, not simplified
The thing people expect from a small cake is that it will be a cupcake with ambitions. It is not. A mini cake comes out of the same bake as a full-size one: the same sponge, the same filling, the same buttercream, the same hand on the piping bag. Nothing is scaled down except the round it is cut into. Decorating something that small is the fiddly part, because there is nowhere for a wobbly line to hide.
Who they suit
Who they are actually for
Two people who want a birthday cake and not a fortnight of birthday cake. Somebody living on their own who deserves one anyway. A first birthday, where the baby gets a small cake to destroy and everyone else eats something sensible. An anniversary. A driving test passed, a job offer, a hard year survived. A cake that costs less than a bunch of flowers and lasts about as long, in the good way.
The ring mould
How they are made
There is no separate mini recipe and no doll-sized tin. The standard cakes are baked exactly as they always are, and the little cakes are cut out of them with a ring mould, then filled and iced by hand. That is the whole trick. A mini cake tastes like the big one because it came out of the same tray.
The choices
Flavours and decoration
The full list is open to you: chocolate rich enough to eat unfrosted, vanilla made with real vanilla, orange with fresh zest through the sponge and the buttercream, red velvet with white chocolate buttercream, and the spiced carrot with cinnamon and pineapple, which I also bake vegan. Names, ages and short messages are piped on and included in the price. Send a photograph of anything you want matched and I will match it.
The price
What one costs
£5 each, finished the way a mini cake is normally finished. If you want something detailed on top, that is quoted separately, because decoration is the part that takes the time. There is no minimum: order one if one is what you want.
By the set
Sets of mini cakes
Cutting them from a full bake is what makes a set straightforward: one per table at a party, one per person at a small wedding, a run going out as gifts or as thank-yous to a team, all from the same cake and all identical. Tell me how many you need and when, and I will confirm the lot in one go rather than making you order them one at a time.
Getting it to you
Timing, collection and delivery
A mini cake needs less notice than a tiered one, but the diary is the diary: about a week is comfortable, longer if the decoration is detailed, and two weeks if it is landing in a busy season. Collection in Peterborough is free, and local delivery is priced in your quote, so the figure is in writing before anything is paid. I deliver across Werrington, Orton, Hampton, Stanground, Longthorpe, Bretton and the rest of the city. A boxed mini cake travels better than almost anything, so it makes a straightforward gift to send across town.
Where mini sits on the portion guide
The published sizes start at six inches, and a mini cake sits below the bottom of this table. It is here so you can see the jump before you decide which side of it you are on.
| Cake size | Party slices | Finger portions |
|---|---|---|
| 6 inch | 10–12 | 15 |
| 8 inch | 16–20 | 24 |
| 10 inch | 26–30 | 38 |
| 12 inch | 40–44 | 56 |
A party slice is a proper dessert wedge, the kind you'd actually serve at a birthday. A finger portion is the thin wedding-style slice that makes a cake stretch much further. They're just different slices of the same cake, so tell me which you have in mind.
Tell me about your cake
No obligation. Send the details and I'll come back with what's possible and what it costs. If you'd rather talk it through, email sploffin@gmail.com.
50% deposit to book. A 50% deposit secures your date and is what starts the baking. The balance is due a week before you collect, or before I deliver.
Before you ask
Questions people ask
What is a mini cake?
A small celebration cake cut out of a full-size one with a ring mould, then filled and iced by hand. Same sponge, same filling: it came out of the big cake. It suits one or two people, or a table of a few, and it is made to order in Peterborough.
How many people does a mini cake feed?
One or two comfortably, or a handful if you cut it small. It sits below the six-inch on my portion guide, which serves ten to twelve. Tell me how many people are eating and I'll tell you how many to order.
How much is a mini cake in Peterborough?
£5 each, finished the normal way. Detailed decoration is quoted on top, because that is the part that moves the number. Send me what you're after and I'll come back with a firm price within a day.
Can I order a mini cake for a first birthday?
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people ask. The baby gets a small cake of their own and everybody else eats something that hasn't been sat in. Order both together and it's one conversation.
Can I order several mini cakes at once?
Yes. Sets work well for one per table at a party, small weddings, gifts or thank-yous to a team. Tell me how many and when and I'll quote the whole set.
Also from the kitchen
If it is a birthday you are planning, the birthday cakes page covers the full-sized end of it, and cupcakes are the other way to feed a small room.
